Seed Catalog Time
It is definitely seed catalog time. Every time I open my mailbox, I find new catalogs for Spring 2009. I do like getting these seed catalogs because they remind me that winter ice storms won’t last forever and I’ll be able to plant a new garden in a few months. The promise of the new plants growing in my garden helps me stick out the cold and gray winter months here in upstate, New York.
A few of my favorites that arrived this week include:
- Park Seeds
- Harris Seeds
- Stark Brothers (mostly seedlings and bareroot stock)
- Millers Nursery (also seedlings and bareroot stock)
I’m sure others will make an appearance soon- usually right after Christmas when I have some spare cash on hand. This usually means I’ll be digging holes for new fruit trees and bushes as soon as the snow thaws and dragging the tractor out to plow much earlier than my neighbors. After all, the trick to planting a successful garden in NY is to plant early.
Luckily, these seed catalogs also sell the neat gadgets and plant covers that I need to plant early in this area of the U.S. I suppose one of these days I’ll have to build a greenhouse for all of these seedlings- it would probably be cheaper!
If you have a particular seed company that you’d like to recommend, please drop me a note. I’m always looking for new plants to try in my growing zone (zone 4)!
