Our Winter Thaw

Winter Barn View

Today is the first day in weeks that we had temperatures above freezing.  The ice has slid from the roofs of the house and barn scaring those that live within and scattering the wildlife outside to the four winds.  While it will only last today and tomorrow before dipping back down into the 20’s, we’re going to enjoy it for now.

For us here in NY, the winter thaw means mucking out any stalls that are in desperate need and thoroughly scrubbing out the buckets.  For those of you who use heaters to keep your water from freezing, check the area surrounding them to make sure they are free of debris that could cause a fire.  Also, check the level of bedding for your animals- it may be time to add another layer of straw or sawdust to keep those animals warm and dry.

I hope all of you reading this blog are surviving the winter, wherever you may live.  Just keep in mind- spring is right around the corner!
